Pilot and aviation training in India has received a significant boost as France-headquartered Simaero, a world-leading provider in pilot training and simulation engineering solutions, announced the signing of its first A320 NEO full-flight simulator for its state-of-the-art training facility set to open in Delhi NCR in early 2025. To deliver its first simulator in India, Simaero has partnered with HAVELSAN, a prominent Turkish manufacturer.

The new HAVELSAN manufactured A320 NEO device will add to the group’s growing global fleet of 30+ active full-flight simulators and will be ready-for-training by Q2 2025.

The signing ceremony was held at the national capital in the presence of dignitaries from France, Turkey and India which included top officials of Simaero and HAVELSAN.

The French aviation training firm’s signing of the first simulator training facility comes at a time when India is poised for a boom in the aviation sector and experts have forecasted an unprecedented requirement of trained pilots. This first full-flight simulator, to represent Airbus’ variant A320 NEO, the narrow-body, commercial passenger twin engine jet airliner, which is immensely popular in the Indian aviation space for short to medium range of travel. One A320 NEO full-fight simulator can cover close to 6,000 hours of flight crew training.

According to a senior official from the France-headquartered firm Simaero, which has committed $100 million to developing aviation training infrastructure in India, the installation of the full-flight simulator is the first of eight planned simulators at the company’s new training centre in the national capital. This will soon be followed by the addition of other simulators representing widely used narrow-body aircraft, including the ATR 72-600 and B737.

“India’s aviation sector is experiencing unprecedented growth, driven by increased regional connectivity and record orders for single-aisle aircraft, such as the Airbus A320 aircraft family. Partnering with HAVELSAN to introduce the first A320 NEO full-flight simulator at our Delhi facility marks the initial step in our commitment to addressing the rapidly growing demand for pilot training in the country. Our new facility in Delhi will provide high-quality, cost-effective training solutions, reducing the need for airlines to send pilots abroad for training—an expensive proposition,” said Khushbeg Jattana, General Manager of Simaero India.

“As HAVELSAN, we are incredibly excited about the deployment of our Airbus A320 neo full flight simulator to Simaero. This milestone is not only a proud moment for us but also a reflection of the trust we’ve earned from global training centres like Simaero. Over the years, we’ve worked tirelessly to develop cutting-edge simulators that meet the highest standards of quality and safety, and this delivery proves that our commitment is being recognized internationally. We are thrilled to support Simaero’s world-class pilot training programs and look forward to continuing to strengthen our global partnerships in aviation.” stated Mehmet Akif Nacar, Ph.D CEO of HAVELSAN.

British Airways has unveiled its brand-new First seat, combining elegant design with expert British craftsmanship, reflective of modern British luxury travel. The new cabin forms part of the airline’s A380 retrofit plans, expected to take to the skies in mid-2026. The airline’s new first class has been carefully designed to provide the feel of a modern luxury hotel, alongside home comforts and thoughtful British touches at 35,000ft. The seat has been beautifully curated by expert designers and world-class manufacturers from all corners of Great Britain and Ireland, including London, Glasgow, West Yorkshire, Kilkeel and Dublin.

The new seat is ultra-wide (36.5inches), with a bed length of 79inches, and features a multi-purpose ottoman and elegant storable table, a 32-inch 4K TV screen, adjustable mood lighting including scenes such as ‘relax’, ‘dine’ and ‘cinema’. The seat can be adjusted with the touch of a button to find theperfect level of comfort and is located within a cocooned 60-inch curved wall for ultimate privacy, whilst still providing a spacious environment.

For customers travelling together in the centre of the cabin, the divider slides open to create a shared lounge space, and the storable tables mean customers can enjoy ‘buddy dining’ in the seat with their travel companion.

The elegant curves throughout the cabin take inspiration from British Airways’ Concorde wings, giving a natural flow to the space and creating a welcoming environment. Customers can now simply wheel their luggage into their personal luggage space, making it even easier to settle in before their flight.

Elsewhere, the suite features an ambient light with an eye-catching design that subtly references the airline’s speed marque and further nods to Concorde. The suite features window blinds, activated by buttons on the internal control panel for all three windows per seat. The soft panelling inside the seat also helps with acoustics and absorbing sound, which adds to the sense of being in a cocooned, private space. Customers can also use the seat’s brand-new ‘do not disturb’ functionality on its wireless control tablet, which notifies crew if they wish to maximise their rest on board.

British Airways’ Chief Customer Officer, Calum Laming, said: “We’re incredibly proud to launch the next era of First Class Seat that pushes the boundaries of comfort, luxury and modernity, taking into consideration customer preferences and expectations to the finest detail. This coupled with our incredible colleagues delivering a world-class service, following the launch of our First Service Specialists scheme, as well as the many benefits of flying First such as First Wing entry, access to our award-winning lounges including our Concorde Room and priority boarding, means we truly believe we offer a winning combination in delivering an extraordinary experience for our customers.”

The airline listened to colleagues and customers to help shape design elements and specific features to suit preferences, such as the carefully placed storage with usability and purpose in mind. The airline also introduced its fully rectangular bed following customer feedback that replicates all the comforts of a home environment.

The airline also worked closely with world-class manufacturer, Collins Aerospace RTX business, to create the First seat, following its involvement in carefully crafting British Airways’ Club Suite and short-haul aircraft seats earlier this year.

British Airways is proud to be the only European carrier from the UK to offer a First product across the Atlantic. Customers travelling in First can experience the airline’s most luxurious way to travel, from a stylish seat, exclusive access to lounges, fast-track security, use of the First Wing at Heathrow and excellent service on board. The airline offers the most premium experience for travellers from the moment they book to when they land in their destination.

The airline is continuing to invest in its overall customer experience and has already rolled out over 120 initiatives as part of its £7billion transformation focus, from brand-new short-haul seats, free Wi-Fi messaging on board to refreshing its lounges across its global network.

India consistently ranks as one of the top international markets for PHL. The demand for flights between India and Philadelphia has been on a steady rise, particularly post-pandemic, and the numbers are only expected to grow in the coming years. Edgar draws attention towards some compelling figures that highlight the trend and suggest, “India was our third-largest market for direct visitor spending in 2023, with a projected growth of over 25 per cent in the next five years. Last year, more than 190,000 passengers travelled between the two regions, but only 34 per cent used PHL due to a lack of direct flights. We see a huge opportunity to capture more of that market with better connectivity.”

Future-ready infrastructure

PHL offers a wide range of amenities to ensure a comfortable experience for international travellers. With over 150 dining and shopping options, passengers can enjoy a diverse selection of services during their transit. The airport also features several premium lounges, including the soon-to-open flagship American Airlines Admirals Club in Terminal A-West, as well as lounges by Delta, United, and British Airways. Edgar shares, “We want to ensure that passengers from India, or anywhere else, feel welcomed and comfortable. Our biometric exit program, for example, allows for a secure and touchless departure process, making the overall experience smoother and more efficient.”

Sustainability in action

To support its long-term growth plans, PHL has been investing in significant infrastructure upgrades. Recent projects include expanding Terminal F and installing new seating with power access in Terminals D, E, and A-West. These improvements are designed to accommodate the increasing number of international travellers and provide a more seamless experience. Edgar explains, “We’re focused on modernising the airport to meet the needs of today’s travellers. From upgrading our roadways to adding new seating with power outlets, every detail is aimed at enhancing the overall experience.”

Committed to Sustainability

PHL is also making strides in its sustainability efforts, with a bold plan to achieve Net Zero Carbon emissions by 2050. Recent initiatives include the electrification of the airport’s vehicle fleet and ground support equipment, as well as exploring solar energy projects. These efforts are part of a larger goal to make PHL a leader in environmental responsibility. “We’re proud to have achieved Level three Airport Carbon Accreditation in 2024. This is just one step in our ongoing commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and ensuring a sustainable future for the airport,” shares Edgar.

Tech-driven Security and efficiency

PHL is also focused on upgrading its technology infrastructure to improve both security and efficiency. The airport is in the process of transitioning to a fully digital Video Management System (VMS), which will significantly enhance security coverage and resource management. Other upgrades include new Multi-Use Flight Information Displays (MUFIDs) and an updated Terminal Announcement Control System (TACS). Edgar shares, “These technology upgrades will not only improve security but also contribute to our sustainability goals by reducing energy consumption. We’re always looking for ways to improve both operations and the passenger experience.”

A bold vision for future

As PHL looks to the future, there are plenty of exciting projects in the pipeline. The airport recently launched the PHL WORKS initiative, aimed at improving service excellence across its 16,800 employees. This program is part of PHL’s broader effort to create a world-class experience for travellers, whether they’re flying in from India or anywhere else in the world. Edgar concludes, “India remains one of Philadelphia’s top international visitor markets, and we’re committed to making the travel experience as seamless as possible. Direct flights to Philadelphia would open our region to even more Indian travellers, whether they’re visiting for business, education, or tourism.”

SriLankan Airlines, the official Airline Partner of the Sri Lanka Design Festival (SLDF), premiered the latest range of products under its award-winning upcycle brand, ‘Mathaka,’ at the event held from 6 to 11 November 2024 at Cinnamon Life. Launched in 2021, SriLankan Airlines’ ‘Mathaka’ brand transforms the airline’s retired materials into a range of on-trend lifestyle products and collectibles, underscoring its commitment to being one of South Asia’s most sustainable airlines.

SriLankan Airlines, like many organizations worldwide, has faced the challenge of ethically disposing of materials retired from its operations. For the airline, this meant dealing with unusable aircraft seat covers, blankets, curtains, uniforms, wooden air cargo pallets and other items. The airline found its solution in Mathaka, aptly named for transforming remnants of yesterday’s onboard product into brand new consumer items. Mathaka allows SriLankan Airlines to take its planet-friendly philosophy to another level by fashioning people’s memories of air travel into tangible products.

The latest range, which includes travel bags, tote bags, peg dolls, table runners and mats, and many more exciting items, also ushers in a new era for Mathaka, with SriLankan Airlines forming collaborations with three Sri Lankan women sustainable entrepreneurs to create Mathaka products. This consists of House of Lonali, founded by Lonali Rodrigo; SO4 by Ruth Weerasinghe; and Pom’s Island by Shamin Abideen. In addition to its sustainable advantages, the Mathaka project also supports the livelihoods of economically disadvantaged women, who are involved in producing certain Mathaka items.

Richard Nuttall, Chief Executive Officer at SriLankan Airlines, stated, “Since our earliest days, SriLankan Airlines has championed environmental causes, backing our commitment with action. We are proud to collaborate with these outstanding individuals, with whom we share a deep commitment to sustainable practices, to create our latest range of Mathaka products. We are also grateful to everyone who explored the Mathaka collection at SLDF; your enthusiasm for sustainability inspires us to keep pushing the green envelope, and we look forward to bringing these items to the marketplace very soon.”

Saminda Perera, Head of Marketing, Environmental Affairs, and Sustainability at SriLankan Airlines, added, “As we continue to evolve in a world that demands more sustainable practices, we are excited to introduce the next phase of Mathaka. This initiative aligns with our sustainability goals and offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact through innovation, women’s empowerment and community-driven enterprise. It’s a reminder that sustainability is a shared responsibility – one that we proudly uphold as a company and as global citizens.”

The new Mathaka collection was unveiled at SriLankan Airlines’ stall at SLDF, which also showcased the airline’s other sustainability efforts. SriLankan also hosted a workshop led by Pom’s Island founder, Shamin Abideen, during SLDF, focusing on upcycling and recycling pallet wood.

Project Mathaka is one of several initiatives undertaken by the airline’s Marketing and Environmental Affairs and Sustainability team to support the environment in measured and impactful ways. SriLankan Airlines was the first airline in Asia to introduce ‘Planet Friendly Flights’ back in 2009 and was named the second lowest carbon-emitting airline in the Asia-Pacific in 2016 by Business Traveller.
